Vérité et réconciliation

Note de la rédaction : Le 30 septembre 2021, le Canada a célébré la première Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation. Pour souligner cet événement, nous nous sommes questionnés sur les concepts de vérité et de réconciliation lors de notre atelier idAction à la Maison des amis du Plateau. À la suite de cette rencontre, Gilles a souhaité nous partager quelques-unes de ces réflexions.

 

Aujourd’hui [NDLR : le 30 septembre 2021], nous avons essayé, dans notre groupe d’Exeko de la Maison des amis, de discuter de ce nouveau concept de paix. Cette journée fériée n’était que pour le gouvernement seulement et non pour les gens ordinaires ou extraordinaires comme nous.

N’oublions pas qu’il [le gouvernement] est et était le problème et coupable de crimes odieux. Il n’était pas le seul. L’Église Catholique, les colonisateurs britanniques et français ont eu leur part de torts. Tout cela pour que ce peuple [les autochtones] soit assimilé à leur image – supposément civilisée – même si ce peuple respectait la nature et la vie selon leurs besoins et étaient les premières personnes éco responsables bien avant les gaz à effet de serre.

Soyons honnêtes envers la plupart d’entre nous. Nous ne nous sentons aucunement concernés par ces anciennes histoires. Faux ! Cela fait partie de notre héritage qu’on le que l’on veuille ou non. Agissons maintenant pour leur redonner leur fierté.

On m’a demandé si j’étais au courant de l’histoire des pensionnats et j’ai dit que ça m’avait été raconté quand j’étais à l’école primaire. Comme j’aimais l’histoire, j’ai continué à m’informer. J’ai toujours voulu voir plus loin que mon nombril. Pour mieux comprendre.

Nous ne pouvons pas effacer ou changer l’histoire ni simplement dire «désolé». Ça ne suffira jamais à comprendre ou alléger les souffrances. Porter un chandail orange pour célébrer, contester ou pour toutes autres raisons, c’est bien, mais le mieux serait de laisser ce peuple nous raconter leur histoire comme il l’ont vécu et nous obtiendrons une vérité : la leur. Avec celle du gouvernement et celle de l’Église, nous aurons trois vérités.

À qui allons-nous confier cette tâche ? Cette lourde tâche de récolter les différentes vérités ? À un historien, oui. Mais ces informations, d’où viendront-elles ? Des nations abusées ? Des documents gouvernementaux ou ecclésiastiques dont certains sont falsifiés ?

De quoi ce peuple a-t-il besoin ? Des excuses longtemps attendues ? Des compensations ? Ou de leur laisser reprendre leur place dans la société que nous continuons de considérer comme la nôtre ?

La réconciliation viendra, non pas des instances supérieures, mais seulement de notre conscience. Ce qui a été fait ne peut pas être défait. C’est à nous d’y voir individuellement et de poser un geste vers l’autre. C’est peu, mais très efficace. Arrêtons d’attendre après le gouvernement et ses promesses pour agir.

Nos ancêtres ont fermé les yeux. Ne faisons pas comme eux.

P.S. Toutes les statues et monuments ne devraient aucunement être détruits car c’est aussi notre histoire. Je souhaiterais que l’on affiche les rectifications, tant aux événements qu’au parcours du personnage afin que les générations futures puissent essayer de comprendre et apprendre que chaque peuple, à travers l’histoire, a droit à sa vérité.

Arrêter de cacher la honte de ne pas avoir agi et ignorer ne devrait pas faire partie de notre vocabulaire. C’est à eux de vouloir nous pardonner.
