In light of the current health and social crisis, Exeko has had to rethink its activities in order to respond to the growing and urgent needs of its community, social, cultural and institutional partners, in a spirit of solidarity and support. In particular, we have put in place, on the short term, spots where people in situations of homelessness can rest safely, have supported the deployment of teams of street workers, have been vocal alongside other organizations in denouncing social and racial profiling in the context of the pandemic and have supported local initiatives offering community responses to the various difficulties in implementing sanitary measures.

Alongside these actions, the organization has decided that is essential to lead a deeper, medium- and long-term reflection on the impact of the crisis on the populations and groups with which we collaborate. Thus, a committee dedicated to analyzing current social transformations has been put in place in order to document all the various impacts of the crisis, in the scope of orienting and guiding the organization’s actions. This committee first focused on how the crisis has amplified the hardships and the marginalization experienced by racialized people, women, people living with functional limitations, neurotypical people, Indigenous people living in urban and rural areas, people living in situations of serious poverty, and members of the LGBTQI+ community. By favoring a wider view of the reality of these groups, the committee has also payed attentions to the effects of simultaneous belonging to more than one of these groups, in an intersectional perspective. The pandemic has revealed a (predictable) relationship between social inequalities and the disproportional impact of health and economic crises on vulnerable people. It also confirms that all of these groups have had to deal with disproportionate impacts due to pre-existing problems. These reflections and analyses, done mostly through a press review, a literature review and one of our communication links with the communities concerned, has brought us to rethink our programs, our polices and our position, in order to contribute to a relaunch which is based on decolonial, anti-racist, intersectional and inclusive principles.
