Puisqu'ils représentent plus de la moitié de la diversité culturelle du monde...

L’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO) estime entre 370 à 500 millions le nombre d’Autochtones, représentant « plus de la moitié de la diversité culturelle à travers le monde » et à l’origine de quelques 7000 langues vivantes.

Chaque année, le 9 août, il s’agit de faire découvrir la diversité de ces peuples et sensibiliser sur la reconnaissance de leurs droits en soulignant la première réunion du Groupe de travail des Nations Unies sur les populations autochtones, qui a eu lieu 9 août 1982. Ce groupe de travail a rédigé la Déclaration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones (DNUDPA) qui vise à prendre position et rappeler leurs droits sur des enjeux spécifiques particulièrement leur droit à l’autodétermination, à leur spiritualité, à leur langue, aux terres, aux territoires et aux ressources.

C’est aussi dans cette optique que les Nations Unies organisent la première Conférence mondiale sur les peuples autochtones les 22 et 23 septembre prochains, une occasion de partager les perspectives et les meilleures pratiques sur la réalisation de leurs droits.

De même, le Forum social des peuples qui se tiendra du 21 au 24 août à Ottawa sera un espace ouvert de débats et d’échanges, la libre expression d’idées et de propositions pour des changements. La solidarité, particulièrement dans le respect des droits des peuples autochtones sera à l'honneur.

Riches, multiples, les peuples autochtones sont bien souvent méconnus ou, quand ils le sont, c’est principalement sous l’angle d’enjeux et de problématiques. Et pourtant, ce n’est pas que ça, un sombre tableau noir. Leur créativité et leurs initiatives sont bien vivantes et s’inscrivent tant dans la valorisation de la tradition que par un vent de modernité et de résilience.

À Exeko, nous reconnaissons la confiance que nous offrent les Autochtones dans nos programmes, qui est à chaque fois l’occasion de créer des ponts entre plusieurs cultures.

Ainsi, l’exposition Métissage Urbain a été inspirée des rencontres et initiatives créatives d'idAction Mobile, notre caravane philosophique et culturelle. L’idée était d’initier les personnes autochtones en situation d’itinérance à l’art contemporain et à sa pratique dans une optique d'échange créatif à double sens.

idAction, en collaboration avec le Projet Pikwadin et la communauté de Kanehsatake, a accompagné les jeunes à faire revivre la radio communautaire.

Les jeunes et l'équipe Trickster préparent activement le prochain spectacle à Kahnawake, belle conclusion pour le Drama Summer Camp.

C'est également le Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal qui a mis en lumière l'année passée la nouvelle génération d'artistes dans le cadre de Beat Nation, Art, hip-hop et culture autochtone.
